How to Participate

Outings Participation

All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. If you would like to read the Liability Waiver before you participate in an outing, please go to www.sierraclub.org/outings/chapter/forms, for a printable version.

Advance reservations are required when a "**" appears in the header or when the write-up states to contact the leader. For outings not requiring reservations, just show up at the designated time and place. The Sierra Club San Diego Chapter Outings Policy places strict limits on the size of outings groups: 25 for hikes and 15 for backpacks. Leaders may set a smaller group size if that is indicated in the trip write-up. If a group is at maximum size, you will not be allowed to tag along. This size limit policy applies even if no reservations are required.

When making a reservation, be prepared to convince the leader that you are in good enough shape to complete the outing at the described pace; see "Trip Grading System" on page 7 of The Happenings. Leaders may exclude participants who are not fit enough or who do not bring or wear proper equipment. Screening for condition and equipment will occur even if reservations are not required; you might be turned away from a show-up outing.

Participants should sign up individually. Leaders can refuse to accept group sign-ups. Many leaders have had bad experiences with groups all canceling at once or people in a group arriving without proper equipment because the person who made the reservation did not deliver information.

Outings requiring reservations often have waiting lists. If you have a reservation and decide not to use it, please let the leader know. You do not have to state your reason. The leader can then give your spot to the next person on the waiting list. If you have a reservation for an outing and do not show up as scheduled, that leader may exclude you from her/his future outings. Show up for the outing on time, with the required equipment, and be prepared to pay the person you ride with in a carpool (see page 7 of The Happenings for carpool locations).

For information about an outing, contact the leader. No one else can give you complete details or sign you up. Please call only at times designated in the outing write-up; if no time is given, you may call between 9 AM and 9 PM. If no date is given, you may call as soon as you receive The Happenings!
